Interesting excerpt from Mrs Blairs new autobiography.

I really think that, in some ways, GW has been unjustifiably painted as some kind of ogre. According to this snippet, that was clearly not the case - at least not on a personal level. But that still leaves the chasm between GW the nice guy and GW, the incredibly bad leader.
American Presidents have often displayed this dichotomy. Bill Clinton was an intelligent, savvy politician on one hand and couldn't keep his pants zipped on the other. Jimmy Carter was smart, compassionate man but could not motivate the American public to save his life. It just goes to show that, like everyone else, American Presidents are complex, multi-faceted personalities who are subject to the same foibles as the rest of us.
I think it is somewhat frightening the amount and intensity of the vitriol that has been loosed on G W Bush. There is no question that he has not performed well as the leader of this nation. But the extreme crackpots who have surfaced in opposition to him are a lot scarier than he is.

I've always thought that Bush was essentially a front man for Cheney and others. I have no doubt that most if not all of the things he has done were not his ideas at all but that he was talked to and/or told to go along with them by the neo-con /PNAC group.
If it wasn't for the fact he's a Bush and his parents support he would have never been a president (or succeeded at business from all I have read) IMO, the man just doesn't have the intelligence, qualifications, and abilities to really be a class act for president.
And this can certainly apply to others with connections like the Kennedy's though I do think they had more smarts than Dubya.
As to all the harsh words about him some but not all of it is justified. The cultural zeitgeist has changed since the old days . In the past people would have not liked his politics but they would have been less caustic about it and just waited for the next elections to get the man out. These days people have no qualms about saying what they think right out loud and to your face and of course in the media. There is a lot less civility....but then then the Republicans are just as bad in their comments about the dems and Clinton. _________________ "Some say the valley has always been haunted ever since River ran.
