"And certainly I'd rather they diverted those resources towards the projects that had the most potential to benefit humanity. Wouldn't you?"

We DO have many scientists dedicated to finding cures for many of our diseases.
I would not want to take anything away from them.
But, there IS room for other projects as well.

"Where is the funding going to come from?"

From donations and grants and hey....they could have a yearly telethon!!!
The Stanton Friedman Annual Arbor Day UFO Telethon!!! Smile

"And how many young scientists would actually want to study a fringe topic like Ufology..."
~
Enough to make it worth studying, imo.

I think it would be very interesting to see what would happen if all the ufologists and others stopped being interested in and investigating and writing aout the ufo enigma. Would the number of sightings and abductions decline? Would we have different types of cases or would the whole thing just...disappear?
I would like to see just how much is sociological zeitgeist or meme and how much of it is 'real'?

It has been particularly disappointing to see renewed interest recently in the contactees of the 1950s. To me, this indicates the total dearth of new ideas in UFOlogy.

You'll also notice that much of the sturm and drang has centered around twisting the government's arm to tell us something. The phenomenon itself has been very quiet (or at least has been totally obscured amongst the hoaxes that occur with numbing regularity these days).

More evidence that UFOlogy is out of gas? Well Binnall of America has a "fascinating" new interview with (who else?) Stanton Friedman! First Jeremy, then AboveTopSecret and now BOA, all in the last month. I don't care if Stan is hyping a book or not, enough is enough! Rolling Eyes
