Betty and Barney Hill seemed to have had an abduction, clean and simple. It wasnt until people started messing with what they were told that all the "theories" came out about what they really experienced.

One of the theories, the PSH explanation was influenced by the fact that they did not mention wrap around eyes in their hypnotic regression sessions until after the Outer Limits episode, The Bellero Shield , aired. This does not mean they were not abducted, just that culture influences our perceptions of what we experience.

Moseley has no theory, but a strong suspicion that they were not physically abducted by ETH aliens. He still agrees that they experienced something but is not about to speculate so many years after the fact.

Its a clean tale thats now been tossed aside for faries and such, now instead of abductees being dragged onto a flying saucer, there floated thru windows, whats that all about really.

It's about folklore in the making. It's about folklore happening. What experience actually lies behind the folklore is open to debate, but I don't see evidence for the ETH, despite the strong early cases. The phenomena seems to fit the zeitgeist, just as the culture influences our perception of the phenomena.

Perhaps it's a feedback mechanism and there's no true intelligence behind the Ultraterrestrials as Keel surmised, or perhaps it's just demonic deception? Perhaps it's a self deceiving cult of hypnotism worshippers using percipients for their own gain?

Catching up from the first post.

Quote:
She's not been under hypnosis and has some other scattered impressions I'm sure I could drag out of her with time but let's assume for the moment that she is an abductee.

It is my understanding that the human mind operates in a state of hypnosis many times throughout our normal day. Especially driving. Hypnosis is a relaxed state in which you are open to suggestion and like sleep, not aware of time.

When I was commuting from Pahrump to Vegas (72 miles) to work, I had this experience many times. Upon arriving to work everyone would , as a matter of course, ask me how the drive was that morning. It is a dangerous trip! We call it widow maker highway. More times then not, I would answer "Just fine". Then think afterward about what I just said. I could not recollect the trip AT ALL, the time spent on the road was erased from my memory, so I guess because I arrived safely at work I would just say "fine". I was actually telling a fib.

After I looked into this I found it was quite normal, we simply space out sometimes when doing a mundane, normal repetitive chore.

More important to this thread is, if I struggled with my memory about the drive, I would catch myself filling in the gap with the imaginary - (quite possible I was dreaming) events that didn't make much sense at all. Just like arousing from a dream.

The mind plays to keep busy. It is very important that when you become conscious of this effect you consider normal. I don't know how safe it is while driving, but, all I can say is try it some time, ask yourself, not that I got here, but how did I get here exactly? From point A to B.

Honestly saying you discovered "missing time" is absolutely an Honest and Correct reply.

Now, most of you don't really know me very well, but I have a distinct need to discover these oddities about the mind. So, I set up up a video camera in the back seat for a few trips. I noticed I could recall a great deal more detail on the way home from work. Going in the morning however - I failed, and it actually look to me like someone else was driving the car to work.

There is a term psychologists use for this experience but I can not remember it right now. LOL.... It's too scary...

Look at Wiki under DSM-IV Codes Dissociative Disorders, and normal attributes.

Will
I used to do the same thing as I drove to work.
I only had about a 30 mile drive but still, I would basically daydream.
I would arrive at work and have no memory of the drive there.
Thankfully I was not on any major highway.
I have heard of highway hypnosis and I suppose that is what you are referring to??

good post Will,Im sure that same scenerio has convinced some that they were snatched from their cars, but getting back to the Hill case,Yipsl aka Somerville Changling, about that wrap around eye thingy, could it be that when the Hills heard that statement somewhere it explained for them more than there own words could just what these entities really did look like and they simply included that to explain more clearly what they had seen?

It's Somerville Changeling now Carol. Yipsl was based on a mistranslation from the Yiddish for squirrel, which would be my totem animal, if i believed in totem animals. I do collect squirrel related art and tschochkies, and I really love the little rodents.

I intend to stick with Somerville Changeling for the rest of my life as a web name because it fits my maternal heritage and matches my modder wife, redwoodtreesprite's name on the web.

I just read the Hill chapter in the Lorenzen's "Flying Saucer Occupants". I decided on getting the really old UFO books used (thank God for Amazon resellers) and reading the ones I'd missed growing up in a small towns on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and in Central Pennsylvania. FSO includes the Fontes report on the Villas Boas case, plus a psychological analysis of UFO occupant sightings by Leon Sprinkle. It's a good read.

I still believe the PSH explains the wrap around eyes because Barney described this detail under hypnosis only after the show aired. I do not think they were consciously using the show to describe what they saw. The shows probable contamination of the evidence does not rule out high strangeness or a real abduction.

I follow Moseley in his view that something happened to the Hills on the road but it was not a physical UFO abduction. Note that Moseley's coauthor, the late Karl Pflock, did accept that they were abducted, so you could be right that something physical involving aliens happened to them. Overall, I take no position on whether UFO occupant accounts are real, but I do think they are the key to the phenomena's cultural meaning.

It's folklore and folklore happens. Why is up for debate. Wink
