Ugh, I'm sick

Postby Skeptical on Sun Oct 25, 2009 6:36 pm

Well, I guess two plane flights and five days in DC last week were too much for my immune system. Don't think it's H1N1, but I feel like crap. Been staying pretty close to bed today. I promise not to cough on my keyboard but don't get too close. ;)

Well, another couple of airplane flights to Albany, New York and I'm right back where I was a couple weeks ago. More antibiotics are waiting at the pharmacy but don't feel like going out to get them. Maybe if I ask Mrs. Skeptical real nice...

Thanks, Doc. I think I'm building up an immunity to amoxicillin. After three days on the stuff, I'm feeling better but not dramatically so. May have to give my doctor a call back and see if we need to switch medicines.

Maybe it's my suspicious nature but I think something is at work here. I can't prove it but I think that the medical group I go to may have a deal with the insurance companies to try to keep costs down by prescribing the cheapest rather than the best meds. Amoxicillin is one of those "$4 at Wal-Mart" drugs. It is effective for upper respiratory infections but I wonder if, in 2009, it is still the best medicine for fighting them. I guess we should get used to this - regardless of whether it's Blue Cross or the Feds, I'm betting that, from now on, cost and not efficacy will be the deciding factor in how medicine gets practiced in this country.

They do have anti virals of course like tamiflu....not sure why they used amoxicillin since there are many other stronger meds.
