Hey all, I wanted to share my only strange encounter to this point in life, and think this is the proper forum. I don't know what I saw, but I'll describe things as best I can. It happened in the summer of 1979, when I was 7 years old. About a 1/2 mile from my house, there's a big patch of land that used to be a sand and gravel pit. I was bike riding with my cousins and a few friends in the mid-afternoon. We were traveling through the sand pit and came to a stop, taking a break. A small, round, black metallic-looking object about the size of a softball swooped down through the middle of us in an arc, coming out of nowhere. It was absolutely silent, and definitely wasn't a bird or any type of animal as it had no wings, eyes, feather, fur . . . nothing like that at all. At it's lowest point, it was about 3-4 feet off the ground, and as quick as it came, it went up into the sky, traveling up at about a 20-degree angle, becoming smaller and smaller until we couldn't see it anymore. It didn't deviate from that flight path in the least, which you would expect it to do if it was an animal.

I have no idea what I saw, but we all saw it at some point of the encounter. I don't believe in UFOs, so I have no reason to make up such a story. I've never heard of anyone else seeing such a thing here in Connecticut, nor have I found anything about such objects anywhere else. It's hard to imagine aliens traveling around in such a small vehicle(especially when I don't believe in them!), but I just don't know what it was, and it's behavior and appearance tells me it was not an animal. I think everyone has written it off as, "Hey, that was weird!", and we haven't talked about it in years. I guess it could have been some experimental weather device or something similar, but I don't know who would be doing such things there, and the silence of the object seems very odd if it was some sort of remote-controlled, motorized thing. Has anyone else ever encountered such an object? That's about it. Not the most glamorous sighting, but it's the only one I have!

Star
Thats an interesting experience. How close to you did it get?
Did you experience any unusual sensations either at the time you saw it or after?

Star - that almost reminds me of the little foo-fighter drone that makes an appearance in the old movie, Earth Vs the Flying Saucers. Other than that, I don't believe that I've ever heard of an unknown that small. Hope garuda sees your post. He is one of our best historians of UFO arcania. He might know of some similar cases.

I assume that you saw nothing that would indicate that the object was attached to something else (i.e. an airplane, balloon or something)?

Scam - we were stopped on the bikes in a very loose circle, so I would say it was within about 10 feet of us on the inside of the circle. I can't say that I felt anything strange being near it. It just swooped down between the group, and then ascended out of sight. The time that it was near us was very brief, probably not much more than 10 seconds or so. I would say we observed it for a good 3-4 minutes in total, from the time it passed by us until we could no longer see it as it rose.

Skep - I saw nothing that indicated it was attached to another object. There was no visible cable or wire, and as we watched it go back up into the sky, there were no visible planes or balloons. Of course, I wouldn't discount any possibility; when you see something very strange or out-of-sorts, you tend to get lost in the bewilderment of the experience and certainly could miss something, but I didn't notice anything other than this strange little sphere. I'll have to give Earth vs. The Flying Saucers a viewing some time. I've never seen it and it would be interesting to see what you're talking about.

Hello Stareater,
A friend of mine saw a large ufo in the 1980's and a few minutes before it appeared he and his friends saw a small golden sphere the size of a softball.
They are reported from time to time in conjunction with larger ufos.

That's very interesting to hear, something I've never heard being associated with a UFO before. It's also good to know I'm not the only one who saw such an object. The size is right on, the only differences being the one I saw was black and I didn't see any other craft in the sky. Thanks for that sighting story!

Star - the Center for Physical Trace Research is interested in hearing more about your sighting. If you want to share with them, they are at ufophysical.com. Good, reputable guys. More on them here in the coming weeks.

Stareater -

I had a similar experience when I was a teenager, back in the mid-1960s in Seattle. It was a summer night. Probably around 9 or 10 o'clock. I was standing, talking, with a group of neighborhood kids on the front porch of the house where one of the kids lived. Suddenly, something a little bigger than a softball but smaller than a basketball, and glowing rather brightly, came swooping down from above -- wooosh! -- really fast, just missing my head and then it was gone. The entire incident couldn't have lasted more than a second or two. I ducked and nearly lost my balance and shouted an exclamation something like, "What the hell....???" Unfortunately, I was the only one of the 4 or 5 of us that saw this thing and they all just blew me off like I was making it up. I can understand how they didn't see it. They were all talking and were gathered somewhat more toward the middle of the porch with the roof of the porch directly above them while I was more on the periphery of the porch without the cover of the roof. It was just a weird little episode that I'll never forget.

This sounds very similar to some of the phenomenon that is being investigated by the Center for Physical Trace Research in Marley Woods in Missouri. The objects they've observed are a bit bigger - perhaps the size of a beach ball.

Regardless, it makes you wonder whether this is some type of natural electromagnetic phenomenon or, as CPTR seems to think, they are under some type of intelligent control.

Yes, since the object in my experience seemed to be a glowing object, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that it was some sort of a natural phenomenon, electromagnetic, plasma, whatever. On the other hand there are those reports of the glowing balls of light that seem to be making crop circles in England. If those reports are true then it would suggest something with an intelligence behind it. So who knows? But the object in Stareater's experience was metallic, according to the report. If it was, indeed, metallic then I can't imagine it could have been any sort of natural phenomenon. I've read other reports of these metallic spheres. One would suppose such things must be under some sort of intelligent control even if the object was being controlled remotely from some distant location. Although, if that were the case, I can't imagine what the method of propulsion would be. How does one control the flight of a wingless, propellerless, object? It would have to be the same kind of technology that propels the disk-shaped UFOs.

You know how an air bubble will float and rise under water? What if you have a small spherical electromagnetic field of some type? Is it possible that the area inside the sphere is a vacuum or an extremely light gas - hydrogen or helium perhaps? In any case, this might provide the same type of lift without a propulsion system at all.

As for the movement, no telling how a free-floating electromagnetic field would attract and repel the various components of the atmosphere it comes in contact with.

Now, this is based on my marginally successful high-school science background - but it seems like this concept might explain some things. The question is how and why would these electromagnetic bubbles form?
