I hesitated to post this, but then I think that we should look at everything in our skies, so here it is:

No telling what we are going to see in the future - they are starting to swap out conventional aviation lights for LED technology. We know what "shock and awe" was, - how about confuse, dazzle, and amaze!? With military aircraft working close in - a few extra seconds of "WTF!!?" could make a big difference in survivability. Increase the WOW factor LOL........... _________________ SOMNIUM MENS est IANUA ut INFINITIO

Very good point Will. Using these in Afghanistan and other places of conflict would make the enemy hesitate with the WTF factor.
The more I look at this video, the more I'm leaning towards military, but he also mentions plasma. Could we be testing a new form of propulsion though?
And Carol, yes they could be anything, but more likely one of ours don't you think?

The Marines F-35B has a drive shaft driven fan that makes about the same noise you heard in the video - also would have a need for down pointing illumination as in the video. That's my guess. _________________ SOMNIUM MENS est IANUA ut INFINITIO

You know, it's funny you mention the LED navigation lights. It's probably been better than a year ago now, but I spotted an aircraft of some type flying through the night sky with navigation lights that looked more like strobe lights. They were white lights. I don't particularly recall seeing the standard red and green lights at all - just a confusing jumble of lights strobing as the object flew along.
Not sure what that was about but I have never seen another aircraft using those types of lights since.
