|
|
Skeptic Magazine founder Michael Shermer takes us on a hilarious romp through the strange claims we humans put forth as truth - from alien encounters to Virgin Mary sightings on pizza pies, to hidden messages revealed while playing "Stairway to Heaven" backwards - and explains the evolutionary and cognitive basis for these lapses in reason. Don't miss the one-minute challenge testing your own observational skills... Shermer is the founder/publisher of Skeptic Magazine, and author of several books, including Why People Believe Weird Things. (Recorded February 2006 in Monterey, CA)

Ken,
Are you plugging his book or just a skeptic who supports his point of view?

If they are from the future, they could be full of history students. _________________ SOMNIUM MENS est IANUA ut INFINITIO

Does Shermer explain in the book how it's possible that he is right and yet he still looks like the biggest idiot on the panel every time he goes on Larry King Live? _________________ http://www.cultureofcontact.com is LAUNCHED!

| When Shermer first came of the scene that lopsided grin used to irk me,then I realized it was me that needed changing not him.Now I see him differently hes actually charming, hes wrong, but charming. Both he and Klass thought it was perfectly ok to point out what idiots us mere mortals are.I say to all skeptics everywhere, wait until you actually see or experience something then come forward and tell us it was a weather balloon,or a bit of undigested beef.

In keeping with the theme of this thread I thought I'd post this article which addresses the the problem with (some) skeptical thinking. In all fairness it could be equally applied to the believer too but does a good job of highlighting the limitations of investing to heavily in a certain outlook.

While I definitely think people see all manner of things that aren't there and their minds play tricks on them , I also think that some paranormal things are truly legit and unexplained currently by science. _________________ "Some say the valley has always been haunted ever since River ran.

There is no self existent Mr Shermer as his illusionary identity is prone to deconstruction. He is one place marker on a reality map located somewhere in space time, irretrievably lost with the rest of us on the dark side of the moon, despite the fact he doth protest too much this fact while having nothing in his hand but referential choices to demonstrate his own subjectivity. In his denials he has become a pundit and exemplar of paradox....He needs some yin for his yang when he looks in the mirror. A died in the wool skeptic is a died in the wool believer... Silly games without frontiers?....""Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle....It's a knockout...."
There is an old fable which tells that Truth and Falsehood went for a swim together, leaving their clothes on shore. Falsehood
coming out of the water first, puts on Truth’s clothes. Truth, being what it is, absolutely refused to wear Falsehood’s clothes, thus remained naked. Ever since then, Falsehood appearing As Truth, has been accepted as Truth, while Truth still awaits to be seen
