Reactive armor

I regularly get e-mails regarding R&D projects going on inside the DOD. Recently, I got an update about something called reactive armor that is being fitting to Bradley armored vehicles currently in use by US troops around the world. Bradleys had a pretty bad track record when it came to surviving hits by RPGs. Reactive armor, however is giving our guys a better chance at survival. The armor (which looks like a series of boxes fitted to the outside of the vehicle) actually contains explosives. The explosives only go off, however, when impacted by a rocket-propelled grenade. The secondary explosion apparently disrupts the blast pattern of the grenade, greatly reducing the grenade's destructive capability.

Yes, it would be better if we didn't get ourselves into situations where vehicles with reactive armor are required. The world being what it is, however, I am continually amazed at the innovative, sometimes counter-intuitive ways we come up with for saving lives.
