Midwest earthquake???

Well I was laying in bed, half-awake at 5:45 this morning but I felt nothing of the 5.4 earthquake that shook the American Midwest. It must be a slow news day because it is all over the TV news. The best video they could come up with was from Louisville where some bricks fell off a building into the street.

Earthquakes are rare in this part of the world but definitely not unknown. I remember feeling one back in 1980 in Muncie, Indiana. Of course, this will cause everyone to bring up the massive New Madrid (Missouri) earthquake that shook the country back in 1812. That one, estimated at an 8.0, was supposed to have caused the Mississippi River to flow backwards and rang church bells as far away as Boston.

Meanwhile, I recently read about some odd off-shore earthquakes off the coast of Oregon. Scientists usually say they are associated with volcanic activity - wonder if something is brewing in the Cascade Mountains again?

It's that damn Mayan calendar - maybe things are starting to ramp up early. Confused

Yes Skeptical,I read about those odd earthquakes off of Oregon and I thought to myself this is going to trigger an earthquake elsewhere,but in all honestly I thought it would be in Alaska,this is really a surprise.It didnt do much damage and thats a good thing but Ill bet it sure shook some people up. We have a fault line that supposed to run under the Ct.river.Im not sure of that but earthquakes are supposed to happen a lot in this state,its just that there so minor they barely register.

I heard we had one here in Indiana also at 4:30 cst but I was asleep and felt nothing.
My wife was up getting ready for work at the hospital but said nothing to me. The quake Must not have been very heavy in my area.

I was told we had one to, but I never felt it. I was sleeping at that time, and nothing usually wakes me up. Smile

Another 4.5 aftershock Monday morning. I imagine it will keep rumbling for a little while - I'd rather it blow off steam in small increments. It's interesting that the Midwestern bedrock is particularly good at transmitting the shock for distances of hundreds of miles. Maybe because we're all on the same tectonic plate?

Skeptical,has your local newscast said wheather this area has ever had earthquakes before?

The Midwest is no stranger to earthquakes, Carol, but most of them go unnoticed. The Friday quake was supposedly the strongest in these parts since 1968. The New Madrid (pronounced MAD-rid) Fault has been the biggest troublemaker but it only seems to generate a strong quake every few hundred years - of course the 200th anniversary of the last strong quake would come in 2012...coincidence??? Shocked

My section of the Midwest has been pretty quiet this year weather-wise but, overall, this has been a near-record year for tornadic activity. Some of the scenes of devastation from out in Kansas were unbelievable. I saw the Weather Channel's heavy-weather veteran Jim Cantore last night and even he was shocked.

I am concerned, however that there is seismic activity all up and down the Pacific plates. The idea of ocean-front property in Nevada is starting to sound better and better.

oops,I was wrong,it was Oaklahoma where the earthquake took place,now this morning comes word that a huge earthquake has hit China.A whopping 7.8,now thats big.
