“Cougars don’t exist in Illinois,” we have all been told for years, especially before two 21st century incidents began to alert people to the notion eyewitnesses seeing the cats weren’t crazy.
“They are extinct in the state,” officialdom still claimed.
Now, beyond belief, a cougar or puma or mountain lion, whatever you wish to call it, has been killed on the North Side of Chicago on April 14, 2008.

I watched them chase it and kill it on the evening news that night.
Could have been an illegal pet or might have wandered down from Wisconsin or northern Illinois forests. _________________ "Some say the valley has always been haunted ever since River ran.

Something is definitely going on in the animal kingdom. Bears have started making their way back into Ohio and they haven't been seen here in any numbers for many decades. You'd think that encroachment by people would drive them away but I think animals have evolved and actually gotten more adept at co-existing with people. Deer and geese seem to be living with us in record numbers and, when the eating is that good, predators can't be far behind.

I love to see the wildlife around here and have noticed that even though I am in the country, we are getting some visitors I haven't seen before come here. _________________ http://www.ufoalley.net

| Well corn is getting mighty expensive but I buy fifty pound bags of whole kernal corn and toss it out the back for the wild turkeys, these drew in a female deer I call Lady and her twin kids, then I put out a salt lick and now the back yard is like a zoo.

The resurgence of predators is most interesting for me to watch. Coyotes, for example, are now in every state. I've seen more fox and there's probably enough food for big cats and wolves in just about every subdivision these days too.
Undoubtedly, all of this is the direct result of human impact on the environment. Yet, instead of threatening these species, it's lead to a population explosion. Not the result one might have expected.

| I think it's another example of the amazing adaptability of nature. While weaker species may die off from human encroachment, I think most animals will adapt and thrive. Speaking of coyotes, we saw very few in my area for years and years; now, our neighborhood cats have vanished and we can't let the pets out before dawn or later in the evening. Our two cats survived, but nearly every cat in the vicinity became coyote food. If the animals have nowhere left to go, they will learn to live in civilized areas.
