Here is a link to a very interesting article about a pair of Italian brothers who tapped into Russian space communications in the early days of the space race in the 1960s. Sadly, it seems like the death toll in the Russian program was much higher than anyone in the West suspected:

It is amazing how brave that first generation of astronauts and cosmonauts were. When you think of the state of technology in the late 50s and early 60s, it's a wonder any of them made it back. Confused
